Romantic Marriage Proposal in Cambridge

Of all of my amazing photography assignments in 2022, Sukh’s surprise proposal to Sonika in Cambridge definitely stands out in my memory. It was a truly wonderful moment, not only to document but to play a vital role in. I was honoured to be asked and was ready to give everything I had to the task.

Being the romantic that he is, Sukh planted a trail of envelopes addressed to Sonika, leading her all the way from London to his secret location in Cambridge. I met a confused but excited Sonika at Cambridge train station and explained that Sukh had organised for me to take her on a tour of Cambridge, visiting some of their favourite places while capturing some documentary-style photos. I handed her the second envelope of the evening, we hopped in a taxi, and off we went…

The envelopes each contained riddles for Sonika to solve, which would guide her to the next clue. Our first stop was Bould Brothers, where they met for one of their first dates and had since become their favourite coffee shop. Once inside, Sonika noticed they had a new item on the menu, just for her.

The next riddle led us to Maison Clement patisserie, where Sonika’s favourite dessert was waiting for her, accompanied by another envelope.

We had one last stop on our tour of Cambrdige, this one was Kings College…

I was running out of random facts about Cambridge at this point, which is just as well, because someone was waiting for us just over the bridge…

She said yes!

Just like a movie scene, the rain was absolutely hammering it down, but that wasn’t going to stop us! We continued our tour of Cambridge, visiting a few iconic locations for some lovely photos of the newly engaged couple. Usually, I have to do a little bit of coercing to get couples to relax in front of the camera, but these two were so enthralled with each other that I hardly said a word as they danced their way down the cobblestone streets and off into the night…
